Ericsson Wins 3G Network Contract in Jordan

Virgin Mobile Tops UK Mobile Broadband Tests

The results are now available for the first Mobile Broadband Genie Road Trip Awards. The exercise directly pitted dongles provided by six of the UK's mobile broadband suppliers (O2, orange, 3, T-mobile, Virgin Media and Vodafone) against each other on a 350-mile rail journey over two days.  more

EU calls on mobile operators to continue to improve child safety policies

Half of 10 year-old, 87% of 13 year-old and 95% of 16 year-old children in the EU have a mobile phone, but half of European parents worry mobile phone use might expose their children to sexually and violently explicit images (51%) or bullying by other children (49%), according to a survey. The European Commission has now called on mobile operators to do more to keep children safe while using mobile phones by putting in place all the measures in the voluntary code of conduct, signed by 26 mobile operators in 2007.  more

Bouygues Telecom Loses 3G License Appeal

The European Court of Justice has ruled that the French government was correct in retrospectively lowering the 3G license fees it charged to France Telecom and Vivendi's SFR. In 2000, the French government sold two 3G licenses to France Telecom and SFR for EUR4.95 billion each. A later attempt in 2002 to sell the remaining two licenses raised just EUR619 million from Bouygues Telecom. The fourth license remains unsold to this day.  more

Jordan Announces Delayed 3G License Tender

Jordan's telecoms regulator, the TRC has published the tender document for its 3G licenses. The regulator has set a reserve price of JOD25 million (US$35.5 million) per block of 5+5 Mhz spectrum. Bidders will also be able to bid for an optional block of GSM spectrum, enabling any new entrant to provide both 2G and 3G services.  more

FMC and femtocell equipment markets poised to take off in face of downturn

Market research firm Infonetics Research has released a report on FMC and Femtocell Equipment, which forecasts that combined, sales of FMC network element equipment and femtocell equipment are expected to grow at a healthy rate through the economic downturn and really take off in 2011, reaching nearly $8 billion worldwide by 2013.  more

Orange and Vodafone Outsource their UK Network Management

Two of the UK's mobile networks have separately - but on the same day - announced network maintenance outsourcing deals. orange UK has given a 5-year contract to Nokia Siemens Networks, while Vodafone UK granted a 7-year contract to Ericsson.  more

Kenya Poised for Huge Growth in Mobile Services

O2 Expecting New iPhone Model within Months

The UK operator, O2 is reported to be planning to cut the retail price of Apple's iPhone in preparation for the launch of a replacement model in June or July. The UK trade magazine, Mobile Today reported that the operator will drop the price of the 16GB 3G iPhone to free on its cheaper tariffs to clear stocks.  more
