Europe's Top Ten Networks - All Now Over 20m Customers

In Issue 98 of the Mobile World Briefing, when last reviewing the European market, we suggested that "if the normal seasonal pattern is repeated in Q4, then the final period of the year should see something between 25-30m new connections, enough to take penetration up to 110%". We mention this, because the normal seasonal pattern was repeated, we did see 25m new connections across the region and penetration is now standing at exactly 110%.  more

Orange boss resigns

Orange has unexpectedly announced that Sol Trujillo is stepping down as Chief Executive Officer. The Orange Board of Directors have agreed to adopt the recommendation of the Orange Nominations Committee in appointing Sanjiv Ahuja, currently Orange COO, as Sol Trujillo's successor. more

Alcatel picks up 3G contracts

Alcatel says that it was selected by Orange as a supplier of choice for its 3G/UMTS infrastructure. The company also announced that is has signed contracts with Orange France and Orange UK to carry out significant 3G/UMTS deployments in France and to become Orange's second supplier in the UK. more

Orange UK increases its ARPU

Orange has reported that its revenues contributed to France Telecom amounted to 16.7 billion euros at December 31, 2002, up 11.7% on a pro forma basis. Subsidiaries controlled by the Orange group had 44.4 million customers at December 31, 2002, an increase of 9%, with 3.6 million new customers in one year. Non-voice revenues were 1.7 billion euros at December 31, 2002 and now represent 10.8 percent of network revenues. more
