New forum to push Java handset development
The OSGi Alliance has announced the formation of the Mobile Expert Group, a new working body designed to further promote the use of Java technology in the mobile space. Comprised of industry leaders including BMW, Gatespace Telematics, IBM, Motorola, Nokia, oracle, Panasonic, ProSyst, Siemens VDO Automotive, Sun Microsystems, Telcordia Technologies and others, the Mobile Expert Group is chartered with defining requirements and specifications for the next generation of Java technology-based platform software, targeting data-capable mobile devices. more

Siemens UK promoting Java downloads to cellphones
Siemens IC Mobile's UK division has selected the Pixo Mobile Download System (MDS) as a recommended solution to operators for over the air downloading of wireless Java applications to Siemens cellphones. This new service will be jointly marketed and sold by Siemens and Pixo, and the solution will be hosted by the European mobile application infrastructure provider, End2End. more

Another industry alliance - this time for payment system
Hewlett Packard, Lucent Technologies, oracle, Siemens, and Sun Microsystems have established the PayCircle consortium to provide mobile device users worldwide a standard means of making mobile payments, regardless of the payment systems used by merchants or service providers. PayCircle intends to define open and uniform interfaces based on existing standards. Mobile device users can access their network operators' or payment service providers' mobile commerce offerings without having to install any new software. Security will be maintained by using mobile communication built-in security mechanisms, such as SIM cards, for authentication. more
