Verizon and Nokia Siemens Networks have taken a step closer to being able to transmit commercial traffic at a speed of 100 Gigabits per second (Gbps) traffic. The two companies carried out a successful 100 Gbps transmission on a single wavelength for more than 1,040 kilometers over field fiber, setting a new distance record and demonstrating better performance than conventional transmission. more

Alcatel-Lucent Signs US$1.1 Billion Network Contracts in China
Alcatel-Lucent has signed a package of frame agreements with a combined value of up to EUR750 million (US$1.12 billion) for mobile communications solutions and services with China Mobile and China Unicom. They were secured through Alcatel-Lucent's subsidiary in China, Alcatel Shanghai Bell. more

North American Wireless CAPEX Slumped by 18% in Q3
Ovum RHK has posted its analysis of third-quarter 2007 revenue and capital spending by North American network operators. The research firm says that wireline operators increased capital spending by 7 percent versus the third quarter of 2006, while mobile operator capital spending plummeted 18 percent. Revenues remained on trend, with mobile revenue growing nearly 10 percent, and fixed revenue basically flat versus last year. more

Nortel Wins $2 Billion CDMA Contract
Nortel says that it has signed an expected five-year, US$2 billion agreement with the US based CDMA operator, Verizon Wireless. Under this agreement, Verizon Wireless plans to deploy additional CDMA2000 radio base stations, switching, IP platforms, optical networking solutions and related equipment. In addition, this agreement builds on the contract announced in July 2006, whereby Nortel was selected to supply Verizon Wireless with CDMA 1xEV-DO Revision A technology. more
