Nokia's CEO Outlines Vision for the Future

Today at its Annual General Meeting, Nokia President and CEO, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo outlined the company's future strategy. "Nokia is fundamentally changing its business model to transform both the company and the industry. While we continue to compete with the traditional mobile device manufacturers, we also are dealing with new competitors entering the market from the PC and Internet industries," he said.  more

Smartphone sales buck the recession

A report by Infonetics Research is forecasting an 8% drop in the total number of mobile phones sold in 2009, to 1.1 billion worldwide (down from 1.2 billion in 2008), in line with predictions from Nokia, among others. Smartphones were the best-performing segment of the mobile phones market in 2008 and the only segment to show unit and revenue growth in the second half of the year as the world economy entered recession.  more

Smartphone Market Share Increased Rapidly Worldwide According to AdMob

Mobile advertising agency, AdMob has reported that despite challenging economic conditions, smartphones continued to gain significant market share worldwide over the past six months, rising from 26 percent to 33 percent of hits to its adserver platform in February 2009.  more

Nokia Smartphone Sales Fall as RIM, Apple, Samsung Take Market Share

In the fourth quarter of 2008, worldwide sales of smartphones to end users reached 38.1 million units, an increase of 3.7 per cent on the fourth quarter of 2007, according to Gartner. Global sales of smartphones for 2008 reached 139.3 million devices, up 13.9 per cent compared with 2007. more

Smartphones to Account for 23% of All New Mobile Phones by 2013

Rising demand for complex multimedia-centric applications is forcing handset manufacturers to design increasingly ‘smart' and highly personalised mobile devices. A new smartphones report from Juniper Research forecasts that these so-called ‘smartphones' will account for 23% of all new handsets sold per annum by 2013.  more

Smart Phones Ring in Healthy Growth in 2009 Despite Mobile Meltdown

Although the outlook for the overall mobile handset market continues to dim, smart phones remain a bright spot with global unit growth as high as 11.1 percent in 2009, iSuppli is predicting. iSuppli's optimistic forecast for global smart phone unit shipments calls for 192.3 million units in 2009, up 11.1 percent from 173.6 million in 2008. A more pessimistic outlook calls for growth of only 6 percent this year, reaching 183.9 million units.  more

The market for Western European converged mobile devices (commonly referred to as smartphones) experienced a good performance in the last quarter of 2008. According to IDC's European Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped 9.3 million units, 25.9% higher than the 7.4 million shipped in 4Q07. iPhone Showing High Wi-Fi Usage Rates in the USA and UK

Mobile advertising agency, AdMob has highlighted growing Wi-Fi usage in the US and the UK in its November Metrics Report. Worldwide iPhone requests grew 52 percent month over month to 359 million in November, giving the iPhone 6.3 percent of total requests. In the US the iPhone is now the top device with 9.9 percent of requests.  more
