Can Google's Chrome OS Challenge Windows in the Fast-Growing Netbook Market?

Google's new Chrome Operating System (OS) represents a direct challenge to Microsoft's hegemony in the burgeoning market for netbook software, according to iSuppli. Google's Chrome OS will launch in the second half of 2010 and will initially target netbook PCs. Apple Adds MMS and Copy/Paste to the iPhone

Apple has previewed an upgrade of its operating system for the iPhone handsets, along with the immediate availability of a beta software release to registered developers. The iPhone OS 3.0 beta release includes an updated Software Development Kit (SDK) with over 1,000 new Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) including In-App Purchases; Peer-to-Peer connections; an app interface for accessories; access to the iPod music library; a new Maps API and Push Notifications. more

Upwards view: Linux is losing ground

The upwards view of netbooks starts with netbooks and looks up to laptops. It leads to two conclusions. First, the laptop market is becoming increasingly complex, with market segments catered for by a growing variety of low-cost netbooks and laptops. Second, after a strong start, Linux netbooks have now been overtaken by Windows netbooks and Linux is lagging increasingly behind in terms of sales - although Linux's performance in the netbook segment is still outstanding compared to its overall performance in the desktop market. more

Smart Phones Ring in Healthy Growth in 2009 Despite Mobile Meltdown

Although the outlook for the overall mobile handset market continues to dim, smart phones remain a bright spot with global unit growth as high as 11.1 percent in 2009, iSuppli is predicting. iSuppli's optimistic forecast for global smart phone unit shipments calls for 192.3 million units in 2009, up 11.1 percent from 173.6 million in 2008. T-Mobile's Google Phone Coming to More European Countries

T-Mobile says that it plans to start selling its G1 smartphone - based on the Google backed Android operating system - in several European countries within the next few weeks. The HTC manufactured handset is expected to on sale in the Netherlands, Czech Republic and Austria by the end of this month. more

China Mobile Close to Launching 3G "Google Phone"
