Can Google's Chrome OS Challenge Windows in the Fast-Growing Netbook Market?

Google's new Chrome Operating System (OS) represents a direct challenge to Microsoft's hegemony in the burgeoning market for netbook software, according to iSuppli. Google's Chrome OS will launch in the second half of 2010 and will initially target netbook PCs. However, the OS will not only run on netbooks based on Intel's X86 architecture microprocessors, but also those using ARM-based chips, clearly showing the operating system is targeted at very low-cost netbooks.  more

Apple Adds MMS and Copy/Paste to the iPhone

Apple has previewed an upgrade of its operating system for the iPhone handsets, along with the immediate availability of a beta software release to registered developers. The iPhone OS 3.0 beta release includes an updated Software Development Kit (SDK) with over 1,000 new Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) including In-App Purchases; Peer-to-Peer connections; an app interface for accessories; access to the iPod music library; a new Maps API and Push Notifications.  more

Upwards view: Linux is losing ground

The upwards view of netbooks starts with netbooks and looks up to laptops. It leads to two conclusions. First, the laptop market is becoming increasingly complex, with market segments catered for by a growing variety of low-cost netbooks and laptops. Second, after a strong start, Linux netbooks have now been overtaken by Windows netbooks and Linux is lagging increasingly behind in terms of sales - although Linux's performance in the netbook segment is still outstanding compared to its overall performance in the desktop market.  more

Nokia Smartphone Sales Fall as RIM, Apple, Samsung Take Market Share

In the fourth quarter of 2008, worldwide sales of smartphones to end users reached 38.1 million units, an increase of 3.7 per cent on the fourth quarter of 2007, according to Gartner. Global sales of smartphones for 2008 reached 139.3 million devices, up 13.9 per cent compared with 2007. more

Smartphones to Account for 23% of All New Mobile Phones by 2013

Rising demand for complex multimedia-centric applications is forcing handset manufacturers to design increasingly ‘smart' and highly personalised mobile devices. A new smartphones report from Juniper Research forecasts that these so-called ‘smartphones' will account for 23% of all new handsets sold per annum by 2013.  more

Smart Phones Ring in Healthy Growth in 2009 Despite Mobile Meltdown

Although the outlook for the overall mobile handset market continues to dim, smart phones remain a bright spot with global unit growth as high as 11.1 percent in 2009, iSuppli is predicting. iSuppli's optimistic forecast for global smart phone unit shipments calls for 192.3 million units in 2009, up 11.1 percent from 173.6 million in 2008. A more pessimistic outlook calls for growth of only 6 percent this year, reaching 183.9 million units.  more

Are Smartphones Immune to the Financial Crisis in Western Europe?

The market for Western European converged mobile devices (commonly referred to as smartphones) experienced a good performance in the last quarter of 2008. According to IDC's European Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped 9.3 million units, 25.9% higher than the 7.4 million shipped in 4Q07. Industry Big Guns with no Bullets to Fire

T-Mobile's Google Phone Coming to More European Countries

T-Mobile says that it plans to start selling its G1 smartphone - based on the Google backed Android operating system - in several European countries within the next few weeks. The HTC manufactured handset is expected to on sale in the Netherlands, Czech Republic and Austria by the end of this month.  more

China Mobile Close to Launching 3G "Google Phone"

China Mobile is reported to be nearing a launch of a smartphone based on the Google backed, Android operating system - a source close the matter told the South China Morning Post. The handset, codenamed the OPhone will also run on China Mobile's new TD-SCDMA 3G network.  more
