Upwards view: Linux is losing ground
The upwards view of netbooks starts with netbooks and looks up to laptops. It
leads to two conclusions. First, the laptop market is becoming increasingly
complex, with market segments catered for by a growing variety of low-cost
netbooks and laptops. Second, after a strong start, Linux netbooks have now been
overtaken by Windows netbooks and Linux is lagging increasingly behind in terms
of sales - although Linux's performance in the netbook segment is still
outstanding compared to its overall performance in the desktop market.

Mobile Linux Group Selects Wind River As Systems Integrator
The Mobile Linux organisation, the LiMo Foundation has selected Wind River as the systems integrator to deliver the common infrastructure, tools, testing and integration services for the LiMo platform. A Board member of LiMo Foundation, Wind River will now be LiMo's chosen systems integrator providing technology and services to combine, harden and validate code contributions of LiMo members through a Common Working Environment (CWE). more

Open Source OS Assists Chinese Development of the Smart Phone Market
A report from Chinese research firm, CCID Consulting shows that the sales volume of smart phones in China's market in the first half of 2008 reached 15.671 million sets, up 32.1% over H1 2007, and the sales revenue reached 37.74 billion Yuan, up 25.7% over H1 2007. more

Linux Poised to Expand Role as Mobile OS
The use of Linux as a mobile operating system (OS) has been steadily growing, with an increasing number of companies announcing plans to develop Linux platforms. Linux is uniquely positioned in the OS space with implementations in both the smartphone and feature phone segments. This is in sharp contrast to Symbian, Windows Mobile and Palm which have focused on the smartphone segment. However, Linux phones still represent a small segment of the overall handset market. more
