Fragmentation Poses Chief Threat to Android Platform Growth

The Android platform appears poised for considerable growth in 2009, but some hurdles for the platform remain. Google’s senior director of mobile platforms, Andy Rubin, announced on May 27th that its Android platform will appear on at least 18 handset models, designed by 8 or 9 OEMs, in 2009. The upwards view of netbooks starts with netbooks and looks up to laptops. It leads to two conclusions. First, the laptop market is becoming increasingly complex, with market segments catered for by a growing variety of low-cost netbooks and laptops. Second, after a strong start, Linux netbooks have now been overtaken by Windows netbooks and Linux is lagging increasingly behind in terms of sales - although Linux's performance in the netbook segment is still outstanding compared to its overall performance in the desktop market.  more

GPS-Enabled Handsets Expected to Bypass the Economic Downturn

Shipments of GPS-enabled mobile phones will hit a speed-bump in 2009, but will still manage to post year-to-year unit growth through the current economic downturn, according to a new market study by ABI Research. While global handset shipments are expected to drop by 4-5% in 2009, GPS-enabled phones will climb to 240 million units, an increase of 6.4% over 2008.  more
