Cross-group tariffs: good PR but not much else

Prior to 2006, roaming used to be a convoluted process – at least that's what operators claimed. And they could charge as much as they wanted. When the EU began to ask for lower rates, operators retorted that roaming was expensive to administer and difficult to implement. Then Zain (formerly Celtel) came along with its ‘One Network' concept. It removed roaming charges for its customers across Africa, demystified roaming and earned a resounding endorsement from The Economist. The citation read: " Zain Group has in effect created a unified market of the kind that regulators can only dream about in Europe."  more

Zain Saudi Arabia Passes 2 Million Subscriber Mark

Zain's Saudi Arabia subsidiary has reported revenues of US$135 million in 2008, with active customer numbers totaling 2.01 million. The company, which only lauched services on August 26th, 2008 has secured a market share of 7%, based on Zain estimates.  more

Celtel to Rebrand as Zain Throughout Africa

Kuwait based Zain Group says that it is rebranding its entire African operations from Celtel to Zain. The move coincides with the linking of the borderless mobile service 'One NetworkĆ' across two continents.  more

Zain half-year 2008 results, surpasses 50m customers milestone

Kuwait listed Zain (formerly MTC) has reported a significant growth in revenues with customer numbers exceeding 50 million. For the first half of 2008, Zain Group recorded consolidated revenues of US$3.488 billion, an increase of 26% compared to H1-2007. The companyĆ's consolidated EBITDA increased by 20% for the same period to reach US$1.305 billion. Zain consolidated net profits reached US$551.5 million, an increase of 7% on H1-2007 profits.  more

African leaders keen to attract more Middle East investment

African leaders met with Zain (formerly MTC) CEO Dr Saad Al Barrak to discuss opportunities in accelerating economic growth through the further development of mobile telecoms infrastructure. A recent research study by the London School of Economics showed that an extra 10 mobile phones per 100 people in a typical developing country leads to an additional 0.59 percentage points of growth in GDP per person.  more

Celtel Expands Free Roaming Zone to 12 African Nations

Pan African operator, Celtel International has expanded its roaming free service, 'One Network' to include Burkina Faso, Chad, Malawi, Niger, Nigeria and Sudan. These countries now join the Republic of Congo, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda in the network which was initially launched in September 2006.  more
