UK number portability speeded up

The four UK GSM networks have decided to speed up the process for porting a mobile phone number from one network to another. Currently, mobile number portability takes about 25 days in the UK. This delay was introduced to allow the existing carrier 15 days to contact the customer and offer an incentive to stay with the existing carrier and not switch to a competitor. Henceforth, the time period has been reduced to just 7 days, and customers will also now be able to specify which day, after the 7 day delay, that they want the number to be ported to the new network. Seven days is still far longer than the three hours being offered in Australia. The UK became the first country in the world to offer mobile number portability on the 1st January 1999, and since then nearly one million customers have switched networks." more
