Are Smartphones Immune to the Financial Crisis in Western Europe?

The market for Western European converged mobile devices (commonly referred to as smartphones) experienced a good performance in the last quarter of 2008. According to IDC's European Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped 9.3 million units, 25.9% higher than the 7.4 million shipped in 4Q07. Worldwide Mobile Phone Sales Down by 5% in Q4 '08

The global economic downturn had a significant impact on the mobile phone industry as worldwide mobile phone sales to end users totalled 314.7 million units in the fourth quarter of 2008, a 4.6 per cent decline from the fourth quarter of 2007, according to Gartner. Samsung to Launch a "Google Phone" in Q1 2009

Samsung is reported to be preparing to launch a new smartphone based on the Google backed Android operating system within the next few months. The second "Google Phone" is expected to be available in both GSM/3G and CDMA options and sold via T-Mobile and Sprint Nextel.  more

Economic Downturn Sparked a Battle for 3rd Place in Mobile Phone Market

Worldwide sales of mobile phones to end-users reached more than 309 million units in the third quarter of 2008, a 6 per cent increase compared to the third quarter of 2007, according to Gartner. Growth dipped back into single figures, representing less than half the 16 per cent growth rate of the same period in 2007.  more
