Are Smartphones Immune to the Financial Crisis in Western Europe?

The market for Western European converged mobile devices (commonly referred to as smartphones) experienced a good performance in the last quarter of 2008. According to IDC's European Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped 9.3 million units, 25.9% higher than the 7.4 million shipped in 4Q07. For the full year 2008, vendors shipped 31.9 million units, 36.1% higher than the 23.5 million units shipped in 2007.  more

Worldwide Mobile Phone Sales Down by 5% in Q4 '08

The global economic downturn had a significant impact on the mobile phone industry as worldwide mobile phone sales to end users totalled 314.7 million units in the fourth quarter of 2008, a 4.6 per cent decline from the fourth quarter of 2007, according to Gartner. Manufacturers continued to struggle against low consumer confidence in both emerging and mature markets.  more

Handango Publishes Top Mobile Applications Chart for 2008

Mobile applications retailer, Handango has published its 2008 Handango Yardstick. For the first time, Handango is releasing 'Handango's Top Ten' list identifying the top ten downloaded applications across all operating platforms and devices and sold through Handango's multiple distribution channels.  more

Worldwide Mobile Phone Sales Increased 12% in Q2 of 2008

Worldwide sales of mobile phones reached close to 305 million units in the second quarter of 2008, a 11.8 percent increase over the second quarter of 2007, according to Gartner. Sales of mobile phones in the mature markets of Western Europe and North America slightly recovered after a difficult start. Western Europe reached close to 42 million units while North America surpassed 44 million units in the second quarter of 2008.  more
