Brazil Q4 2008 Market Update - Almost 10m added in best quarter ever

The Brazilian market passed the 150m customer mark during Q4 08 and recorded a best-ever figure for quarterly net additions. The gain of 9.85m was more than 1.6m higher than the previous best of 8.22m, the Q4 07 figure. With a year-end total of 150.62m, Brazilian penetration stood at 78.1%. Annual growth was down slightly on the 24.9% recorded in both Q2 08 and Q3 08, but at 24.5% it was still higher than the 2007 figure of 21.1%. In real terms, annual growth was even more impressive with an all-time high of 29.66m net additions in 2008, up 8.61m on the 2007 gain.  more

Brazil's Penetration Set to Surpass 80% as Total Market Reaches 140m

Brazilian penetration is racing upwards, with a 14.0pp gain in the twelve months ending 30th September 2008 taking the figure to 73.2%. This compares to an 8.3pp gain in the prior twelve months. At the time of writing, penetration is likely to be approaching 80%, and although it is common for markets to slow down as 100% penetration is neared, a penetration rate in excess of 90% by the end of 2009 is a possibility.  more

Brazil September 2008 Customer Numbers

The total number of mobile connections in Brazil reached 140.79m at the end of September 2008, equivalent to a penetration rate of 73.2%. Monthly net additions stood at 2.37m down from 3.09m in August, but up on the 1.82m recorded in September 2007. The Brazilian market follows a strongly seasonal pattern, as the chart on the left shows: August is traditionally the second best month for growth, behind December.  more
