Hong Kong opens the tender for its 3G licneses
Tenders for Hong Kong's 3G license auction open today with uncertainty over which companies will be interested in the licenses. the local GSM network, Peoples Phone is understood to have still not decided if it will bid, following reluctance from one of its European shareholders to increase their exposure to 3G commitments. The company has three European shareholders, KPN (11%), Telia (11%) and British Mobile System International Cellular (5.5%), and they all hold a veto over any investment plans by People Phone. Sunday Communications is also understood to still be looking for a partner for its Hong Kong bid, having previously withdrawn from the Singapore auction. more

Hong Kong operators warned over additional costs
The Hong Kong telecoms regulator, ofta has warned the country's cellular networks that it will be closely monitoring how it passes a US$1.30 charge to its customers made by the MTR and tunnel operators to lease space for antenna installation. "While ofta has not found any evidence the new charge is in breach of any telecommunications law, we have written to all operators cautioning them that how they pass on the tariff will be subject to regulatory scrutiny," a spokesman said. The networks have been absorbing the cost, but only recently have they started to pass the cost on to the customer as a separate element of their phone bill." more

Hong Kong finally announces 3G allocation method
Hong Kong's telecoms regulator (ofta) has announced that it will offer four 3G licenses in the province. The hotly debated award method with be a mixture of auction and beauty contest. Applicants will first have to pass a beauty contest to eliminate some bidders then followed by an auction. Also, any license winner will be required to offer their 3G network to other Virtual Operators." more
