Hong Kong networks to get additional GSM spectrum

Hong Kong's telecoms regulator, the Office of the Telecommunications Authority (ofta) has recently received applications from the operators of the country's GSM networks, requesting the Telecommunications Authority to assign to them spectrum which is currently unused in the bands for 2G services. The reason for the request is that the assigned spectrum (i.e. 7.5 MHz x 2 for PMRS based on the GSM standard and 10 MHz x 2 for PCS) has already been fully utilized in the networks and it would be difficult for them to further re-use the assigned carriers particularly in the Golden Bowl areas. As a result, the network capacity would not be able to cope with the increased traffic demand arising from higher speed data services without sacrificing the service quality. more

Hong Kong subscriber numbers fall for the first time

Hong Kong's telecoms regulator, the Office of the Telecommunications Authority (ofta) has reported the first ever fall in cellphone subscriber numbers. At the end of October, the region had a total of 5,659,484 subscribers, but that fell in November by 12,252 to 5,647,232. Breaking the total down, PrePay subscribers numbers fell from 1,391,317 to 1,390,809, a fall of just 508 but the contract subscriber numbers fell by 11,744 from 4,268,167 to 4,256,423. Over the past six months contract subscriber growth has been far slower than earlier this year, and noticeable slower than PrePay growth. The fall has been blamed in part on the networks focusing on retaining profitable customers rather than trying to connect the last few remaining Hong Kong residents that do not have a cell phone." more
