UK Publishes Proposals to Introduce Mobile Roaming for 999 Calls

The UK's telecoms regulator, ofcom says that it is planning to introduce automatic national roaming between the five mobile network operators for calls to the emergency networks. The regulator said that at the moment, mobile calls to emergency numbers can only be connected if the caller's own network is available in the area. This is a particular issue in remote areas and means that in some parts of the UK - particularly in Scotland and Wales - emergency mobile calls cannot be connected from certain mobile networks.  more

No end for national 3G-2G roaming in the UK

The UK's telecoms regulator, ofcom has decided not to release the incumbent GSM operators from their obligation to provide 2G roaming services to the 3G license holder, Hutchison 3G. As a condition of being allowed to bid for a 3G license, the existing operators had to agree to permit the new entrant to roam onto their networks if necessary. Ideally, to be a commercial agreement, but ofcom retained the right to force the issue if necessary. more
