Macau Operators Face 3G License Threat

Macau's 3G networks face a possible censure from the regulators if they miss a target of migrating all their existing 2G subscribers onto the 3G networks within two years of receiving their licenses. The director of the Telecommunications Regulation Bureau (DSRT) issued the warning at the weekend during World Telecoms Day.  more

O2 UK Meets its 3G License Obligations - Avoids Financial Penalties

O2 UK has now complied its 3G license conditions and finally covers 80% of the UK's population. The UK's  telecoms regulator, ofcom had issued a warning to the operator in February that it faced financial sanctions if it didn't reach the coverage milestone by the end of June.  more

UK Trade Body Plans Clamp Down on Cash-Back Deals

The UK's independent mobile retailers association, IMPDA has condemned the operators for apparently not clamping down on so called cash-back deals offered by some companies. Despite a number of high profile company collapses (with more to come) which has left thousands of customers out of pocket, IMPDA says that there are still many companies which still donĂ't adhere to the Networks voluntary Code of Practice or ofcom regulations. more

Calls for Tax Exemption for Charity SMS Donations

Vir2, a provider of SMS marketing and fundraising solutions for charities, has welcomed the decision by UK politican, Mark Oaten MP to file an Early Day Motion calling upon the Government to stop charging VAT (sales tax) on UK charity donations made by SMS. All other methods of giving to charity are VAT exempt. Premium SMS texts are a particularly useful way of collecting money quickly, but the Government are not treating it the same as other methods.  more

UK Orders Mobile Number Porting to Occur Within 2 Hours of Request

The UK's telecoms regulator, ofcom has issued new rules making it easier for consumers to keep their mobile number when they switch providers. Under the new rules, consumers will be able to receive calls using their existing number within 2 hours of moving to a new mobile network (down from 5 days).  more
