The market for Western European converged mobile devices (commonly referred to as smartphones) experienced a good performance in the last quarter of 2008. According to IDC's European Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped 9.3 million units, 25.9% higher than the 7.4 million shipped in 4Q07. For the full year 2008, vendors shipped 31.9 million units, 36.1% higher than the 23.5 million units shipped in 2007. more

Western European Mobile Phone Market now in Recession
Three consecutive quarters of negative growth have led the Western European mobile phone market into recession. According to IDC's European Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped 53.6 million units in 4Q08, 13.5% lower than the 62 million units shipped in 4Q07. For the full year 2008, vendors shipped 190.5 million units in Western Europe, 5.9% lower than the 202.5 million units shipped in 2007. more

Nokia kick-starts GPS market in Europe

According to a new Ovum forecast, the market for GPS-enabled mobile devices
will grow rapidly, from an estimated 163.9 million shipments in 2007 to almost
572 million in 2012. In the early years this growth has been driven by the CDMA
players, namely Qualcomm, serving large CDMA markets such as the US, where the
E911 mandate stipulates the use of location-based technologies in handsets, and
markets such as Korea and Japan where demand for location-enabled services is
higher than in other regions.

Huawei and ZTE Expected to Launch Smartphones in 2008
Both Huawei and ZTE are expected to launch smartphones next year according to sources within Taiwan's handset industry. The two companies are generally targetting the low to mid end of the handset market, although Huawei has been shipping 3G mobile phones to Vodafone under an oem agreement. more

Dell Developing new Windows Mobile Based Smartphone
Taiwan's Quanta Computer is reported to be developing a Windows Mobile based smartphone for sale by Dell Computers. Local news publication, DigiTimes - citing industry sources - said that the new handset project is codenamed "Fly" and would probably contain a full QWERTY keyboard and support HSDPA connectivity, although the specifications have not been fixed at the moment. more
