According to a new Ovum forecast, the market for GPS-enabled mobile devices
will grow rapidly, from an estimated 163.9 million shipments in 2007 to almost
572 million in 2012. In the early years this growth has been driven by the CDMA
players, namely Qualcomm, serving large CDMA markets such as the US, where the
E911 mandate stipulates the use of location-based technologies in handsets, and
markets such as Korea and Japan where demand for location-enabled services is
higher than in other regions.

Financial Crisis Hits Western European Mobile Phone Market
The Western European mobile phone industry felt the impact of the global financial crisis in the third quarter of 2008, as total handset shipments decreased significantly over previous quarters. Mobile phone manufacturers shipped 45.8 million handsets in 3Q08, down 8.0% from the previous year and up 5.1% over 2Q08. The third quarter has historically been a ramp-up period as manufacturers load their sales channels with handsets in preparation for the holiday season, resulting in year-on-year growth as high as 20%. Will WiMAX Deliver on its Royalty Promises?
One of the major advantages claimed by the WiMAX community over their cellular cousins is that WiMAX will come with a far lower average royalty rate than either LTE or UMB. A favorite phrase among the WiMAX oem community is that WiMAX has effectively "democratized" the 4G space. Although ABI research applauds the move to a more widespread intellectual property holding in the 4G realm, it could be argued that this democratization of IP will result in more, not fewer, IP royalties. more

Nokia Chinese Partner May Win CDMA Handset Orders
There are reports that Shenzhen, China based BYD is likely to secure orders for CDMA based handsets from Nokia in the near future. China based BYD recently secured a CDMA subscriber unit license from Qualcomm, enabling Nokia to use the company to bypass its own problems with Qualcomm and launch oem branded handsets. more
