Foxconn Full-Year Profits Drop 83%

Foxconn International Holdings - the mobile phone manufacturing division of Taiwan's giant Hon Hai Precision Industry has reported a net loss for the second half of last year, which dragged its full year profit down by 83.% to US$121 million - compared with US$721 million a year earlier.  more

Worldwide Mobile Phone Sales Down by 5% in Q4 '08

The global economic downturn had a significant impact on the mobile phone industry as worldwide mobile phone sales to end users totalled 314.7 million units in the fourth quarter of 2008, a 4.6 per cent decline from the fourth quarter of 2007, according to Gartner. OBSAI Forum doubles speed in Base Station RP3 standard

The Open Base Station Architecture Initiative (OBSAI), an industry forum established in order to create a suite of open specifications for base station architectures, has announced a doubling of the maximum data rate capability of its baseband to RF module (RP3) interface. This new higher data rate further enhances OBSAI's support for emerging 4G architectures and services and also allows both existing and future RF modules to be 'daisy-chained', thereby saving cabling costs in distributed base-station deployments.  more

Wireless Industry Shipped Over One Million BTS Units in 2007

The global base station market grew by 58.5% in units in 2007, according to the latest report from EJL Wireless Research. "The GSM/EDGE base station market again outpaced our projections from a year ago while WCDMA shipments finally hit mainstream with 114.4% growth," says founder and President, Earl Lum.  more

Radiocomp Aims to Deliver Remote Radio Heads for 3GPP LTE

Will WiMAX Deliver on its Royalty Promises?

One of the major advantages claimed by the WiMAX community over their cellular cousins is that WiMAX will come with a far lower average royalty rate than either LTE or UMB. A favorite phrase among the WiMAX oem community is that WiMAX has effectively "democratized" the 4G space. Although ABI research applauds the move to a more widespread intellectual property holding in the 4G realm, it could be argued that this democratization of IP will result in more, not fewer, IP royalties.  more
