Q1 Worldwide Mobile Phone Sales Declined 9.4% - Smartphones Grew 12.7%
Worldwide mobile phone sales totalled 269.1 million units in the first quarter of 2009, a 9.4 per cent decrease from the first quarter of 2008, according to Gartner. Smartphone sales surpassed 36.4 million units, a 12.7 per cent increase from the same period last year. more

The market for Western European converged mobile devices (commonly referred to as smartphones) experienced a good performance in the last quarter of 2008. According to IDC's European Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped 9.3 million units, 25.9% higher than the 7.4 million shipped in 4Q07. Financial Crisis Hits Mobile Phone Sales as Q3 Shipment Growth Slows
The worldwide mobile phone industry felt the impact of the global financial crisis in the third quarter of 2008 (3Q08) as total handset shipments were down significantly over previous quarters. Mobile phone manufacturers shipped a total of 299.0 million handsets in 3Q08, up 3.2% from last year, and down -0.4% over 2Q08. The third quarter of the year has historically been a ramp-up quarter as manufacturers load their sales channels with handsets in preparation for the holiday season, producing year-over-year growth rates as high as 20% as a result. This year has not witnessed a similar ramp up, largely due to the current economic situation. more

HTC Launches 3G Windows Based Smartphone
Taiwan's HTC has branched out into building up its own consumer brand, launching the world's first tri-band 3G Windows Mobile Pocket PC [TyTN] and 3G smartphone [MTeoR] under the new HTC brand identity. HTC will continue to support its operator-branded products and oem partners as a key priority. At the same time, HTC will provide its new branded products to its existing Qtek channels, distributors, enterprise and operators, who do not carry operator-branded products. more

Microsoft gets foothold inside Motorola
Reports have been circulating that Motorola is planning to develop a smart phone based on Microsoft's operating software. Both companies have refused to comment. A move by Motorola to support the Microsoft software platform would give the cell phone manufacturer a presence in all the major handset OS's currently being developed. The company has already previously announced plans for Linux and Symbian based phones. more
