Q1 Worldwide Mobile Phone Sales Declined 9.4% - Smartphones Grew 12.7%

Worldwide mobile phone sales totalled 269.1 million units in the first quarter of 2009, a 9.4 per cent decrease from the first quarter of 2008, according to Gartner. Smartphone sales surpassed 36.4 million units, a 12.7 per cent increase from the same period last year.  more

Foxconn Full-Year Profits Drop 83%

Foxconn International Holdings - the mobile phone manufacturing division of Taiwan's giant Hon Hai Precision Industry has reported a net loss for the second half of last year, which dragged its full year profit down by 83.% to US$121 million - compared with US$721 million a year earlier.  more

The market for Western European converged mobile devices (commonly referred to as smartphones) experienced a good performance in the last quarter of 2008. According to IDC's European Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped 9.3 million units, 25.9% higher than the 7.4 million shipped in 4Q07. Western European Mobile Phone Market now in Recession

Three consecutive quarters of negative growth have led the Western European mobile phone market into recession. According to IDC's European Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped 53.6 million units in 4Q08, 13.5% lower than the 62 million units shipped in 4Q07. For the full year 2008, vendors shipped 190.5 million units in Western Europe, 5.9% lower than the 202.5 million units shipped in 2007.  more

Worldwide Mobile Phone Market Declined by 12.6% in Fourth Quarter

The worldwide mobile phone market experienced an unusual downturn in the normally robust fourth quarter of 2008 (4Q08). According to IDC's Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped a total of 289.0 million units, 12.6% lower than the 330.8 million units shipped during 4Q07. For the full year 2008, vendors shipped a total of 1.18 billion units worldwide, 3.5% greater than the 1.14 billion units shipped during 2007.  more

HP and Nokia Benefiting from Declining Semiconductor Prices

The top 10 original equipment manufacturer (oem) firms accounted for a third of all semiconductor consumption - equivalent to $91.6 billion - in 2008 according to preliminary results from Gartner. According to a new Ovum forecast, the market for GPS-enabled mobile devices will grow rapidly, from an estimated 163.9 million shipments in 2007 to almost 572 million in 2012. In the early years this growth has been driven by the CDMA players, namely Qualcomm, serving large CDMA markets such as the US, where the E911 mandate stipulates the use of location-based technologies in handsets, and markets such as Korea and Japan where demand for location-enabled services is higher than in other regions.  more
