Major Trial of Near-Field Payments to Start in France
Six major French banks (BNP Paribas, Credit Agricole and LCL, Credit Mutuel-CIC, Groupe Caisse d'Epargne, La Banque Postale and Societe Generale) as well as four mobile operators (Bouygues Telecom, NRJ Mobile, Orange and SFR) have announced plans to join forces in cooperation with MasterCard Worldwide and Visa Europe to launch at the end of November a large-scale field trial to test mobile contactless payment with 1,000 customers and 200 sales outlets located in the cities of Caen and Strasbourg. more

New Chinese contract for Oberthur
Oberthur Card Systems, a manufacturer of smart cards, today announced the signing of a US$23 million contract in China to provide microprocessor chip cards for GSM cell phones. In the past year, the company has been awarded a series of new contracts that include Cable & Wireless HKT Mobile Services for mobile betting, WAYIA and Companhia de Telecomunicacoes de Macau S.A.R.L for mobile stock trading and One.Tel in Australia for mobile Internet access. Oberthur now supplies 13 out of the 20 largest telecom operators worldwide, compared to 8 in 1999." more
