Eircom - Strong Mobile Growth, but Future is Uncertain
Despite the uncertainty surrounding its future, Eircom's 12-month financial results showed solid growth. Recent reports suggest that Australian investment bank Babcock Brown may terminate its management contract with the Babcock Brown Capital (BCM) fund which has direct ownership of Eircom. This may in turn trigger a sale of Eircom, although BCM has publicly stated that it has no intention of selling at present. However, group revenue was up 4.4% to ¢â€š¬2,061m, while EBITDA rose by 7.9% to ¢â€š¬698m. more

Aircom Signs Network Planning Tool Deal with O2
Planning and optimisation consultancy, Aircom International, has been selected by o2 in the UK to supply ASSET, its radio network planning and optimisation tool. The implementation of ASSET into the o2 network has already begun, with a scheduled completion date set for December 2008. o2 has also taken the option to purchase further licenses for ADVANTAGE, Aircom's automatic cell planning (ACP) tool, later in the year. more

Ericsson Wins Irish HSPA Contract
Ericsson has signed an agreement with the Irish operator Meteor Mobile Communications (Meteor) as the sole supplier for a WCDMA/HSPA network including microwave transmission. Under the terms of the contract, Ericsson will supply a WCDMA/HSPA radio access network and a new microwave transmission network. more

Eircom Q3 2007/08 Results - On the Brink of a Million Subscribers
Ireland's third placed operator Meteor, wholly owned by fixed-line incumbent Eircom, stands poised to break the 1m customer barrier, having finished the first quarter of 2008 with 975k customers. Although Q1 08 was the slowest quarter for the operator for six years, both absolutely and proportionately, Meteor kept its total moving forward by 13k (+1.35%), whilst market leader Vodafone saw a decline of a thousand customers and o2 recorded just 1.02% growth. more

A new European market report from Reportlinker notes that the sector has undergone enormous changes in response to regulatory pressure on roaming and interconnection tariffs, competition from numerous new start-up MVNOs, and pressure on voice tariffs and bundled SMS offers which have lowered voice and data ARPU. The company says that revenue growth in coming years will primary depend on the continued increase in subscriber numbers and the use of multiple SIMs, and by the further adoption of rich-media services including music downloads and mobile TV. more
