UK Consumers Interested in NFC Enabeld Mobile Phones
A survey carried out by O2 UK has found strong interest in using NFC enabled mobile phones to pay for consumer goods. Nine out of ten triallists were happy using NFC technology on a mobile phone and 78% said they would be interested in using contactless services if available. Convenience, ease-of-use and the status of having such an innovative device were seen as the main benefits. more

Demand for the iPhone Crashes O2's Website
A flood of customers visiting the O2 UK website this morning to pre-order the 3G iPhone caused the sales part of the website to crash under the traffic load. Pre-orders from registered customers were permitted from 8am this morning - following a SMS alert being sent to prospective customers, but the site was reported to be down within an hour. more

Aircom Signs Network Planning Tool Deal with O2
Planning and optimisation consultancy, Aircom International, has been selected by O2 in the UK to supply ASSET, its radio network planning and optimisation tool. The implementation of ASSET into the O2 network has already begun, with a scheduled completion date set for December 2008. O2 has also taken the option to purchase further licenses for ADVANTAGE, AircomÃ's automatic cell planning (ACP) tool, later in the year. more

Europe's Top Ten Networks - All Now Over 20m Customers
In Issue 98 of the Mobile World Briefing, when last reviewing the European market, we suggested that "if the normal seasonal pattern is repeated in Q4, then the final period of the year should see something between 25-30m new connections, enough to take penetration up to 110%". We mention this, because the normal seasonal pattern was repeated, we did see 25m new connections across the region and penetration is now standing at exactly 110%. more

UPDATE: Apple to Slash iPhone Retail Price in the UK
As expected - although a day earlier than planed - O2 UK has announced that it is cutting the price of the 8GB iPhone by £100 to just £169 (US$333) until 1 June 2008. The offer is available from tomorrow (16th April) on all O2 iPhone tariffs. The 16GB iPhone remains priced at £329. more
