O2 to Test NFC in London with 500 Trialists
UK network operator, O2 has confirmed plans to launch the UK's first large scale pilot of NFC (Near Field Communications) technology on mobile phones. The trial of the O2 Wallet paves the way for the mass market use of mobile phones to pay for purchases, access events or even be used as Oyster cards for travel around London, simply by touching the phone to a reader. more

O2 UK Offers Unlimited SMSs to PrePay Customers
O2 UK has announced a new promotion, where online Pay & Go customers who top up at least £30 (US$61) each month will be able to send unlimited UK text messages every month. The company says that the new deal is in response to a recent survey of O2 customers which indicated that more free texts was the bonus most wanted by 60% of them. more

UK - O2 Continues to Lead, but Vodafone Coming Back into Contention"
The first quarter of 2007 has produced divergent performances from the UK's leading operators. Two of the five network operators saw a drop in customer numbers, while one of the two large MVNOs had the same experience. The clear winner in the quarter was Vodafone, which produced an increase of over 600k, but the winner over a one year's view was quite clearly O2, helped, in part, by the growing success of the Tesco Mobile MVNO. A total of 533k new connections were made in the quarter, to take the UK total to 67.5m and 111% penetration.
Europe Top Ten Mobile Operators - Rankings
In Q3 2006, Ukrainian operator Kyivstar broke into the top 10 of Europe's largest mobile operators, claiming ninth place at the end of September, ahead of France's SFR. Fourth quarter figures now show that by the end of December, Kyivstar had moved up another two places to seventh, whilst domestic rival UMC joined it in the top 10, occupying its former ninth place and ousting SFR from the ranking altogether. more

O2 Abolishes Roaming Charges Between The Irelands
O2 Ireland has became the first operator in Ireland to abolish roaming charges between the Southern Republic of Ireland and British Northern Ireland for all of it's 1.6 million customers. In addition the company has abolished roaming charges across Great Britain and Ireland for its business customers. From April 2006, roaming between Ireland and Northern Ireland will be abolished on O2's network for it's 1.6 million pre pay (speak easy), post pay (contract) customers. This means that these customers will not be charged for calls they receive while roaming in Northern Ireland. more

Qualcomm Gets a Foothold in the UK
Qualcomm has signed an agreement with O2 UK to use uiOne to develop a consistent user interface (UI), initially for two of its own-branded X range devices. With this agreement, O2 becomes the first operator in Europe to announce plans to deploy uiOne. It is expected that O2 devices that use the new platform will be available in late 2006. more
