Wireless-Chip Market Outpaced Wireline-Chip Market in 2007

Growing adoption of 3G technologies and feature-rich cell-phone chips led to a 13% increase in sales of cellular baseband processors in 2007, according to The Linley Group. Sales of networking chips, in contrast, declined by about 1% during the same period according to their new report. The slowdown in wired-communications chips is also reflected in the FPGA market as sales of FPGAs for communications systems declined 7%.  more

nxp Semiconductors (formerly part of Philips) says that it has launched a GSM/GPRS-optimized multimedia solution for the Ultra Low-Cost (ULC) segment of the mobile handset market. The PNX4903 delivers a complete system-level operation in a single monolithic IC. The ULC+ multimedia solution enables a music phone with color screen, MP3 playback, removable flash memory card and FM Tuner for a total bill of materials under USD$20. more

Mobile WiMAX Quickly Taking Over WiMAX IC Market

Fixed WiMAX IC vendors have recently re-directed their energies towards Mobile WiMAX, particularly in the second half of 2006 and into 2007, reports In-Stat. This represents a dramatic change, as the overwhelming majority of 2005 and 2006 WiMAX chipsets were Fixed WiMAX (802.16d)-compliant, with a very small percentage in 2006 representing chipsets used in early WiBro (mobile WiMAX-based) devices, the high-tech market research firm says. more
