NXP Demonstrates Energy Efficient RF Base Station Amplifier

Semiconductor firm, nxp has unveiled what it says is the world’s most efficient 3-way Doherty amplifier, enabling a new standard of energy efficient RF base stations. Based on a novel concept, the Doherty circuit performs at efficiency levels in excess of 47%, at an average power output of 48dBm, a gain of 15dB and peak to average ratio of 8dB for a multicarrier W-CDMA signal. The current design covers the W-CDMA standard for band I operation. The design is tailored towards high yield, minimum tuning, volume manufacturing.  more

NXP Propels NFC with World's First Industry Standard Chip

Semiconductor firm, nxp has unveiled what it says is the world's first truly industry standard Near Field Communication (NFC) controller, delivering a platform for handset manufacturers and operators to introduce NFC devices and services. The new nxp PN544 chip is based on the latest NFC specifications by the European Telecommunications Standard Institute (ETSI).  more

NXP to Transfer its Mobile Services Business to Gemalto

nxp Semiconductor has announced that it is selling its mobile services business to smartcard vendor, Gemalto for an undisclosed amount. The related unit based in France will continue to develop and market software and service solutions compliant with the MIFARE4Mobile interface specifications which manage MIFARE-based applications in Near Field Communication (NFC) mobile devices.  more

First MIFARE Compatible SIM-Based Solution for Mobile NFC Services

Gemalto, nxp and Infineon have announced they are demonstrating the first mobile contactless solution compliant with the Single Wire Protocol (SWP) standard and compatible with MIFARE infrastructures. nxp's MIFARE contactless technology is widely deployed for transport networks and access management worldwide. Being compatible with MIFARE, in addition to all the ISO 14443 contactless infrastructures, the solution will enable users to benefit from any contactless service on his/her mobile phone.  more

STMicroelectronics Lowers 4th Quarter Revenue Forecasts

STMicroelectronics has lowered its revenue forecast for the fourth quarter and the company now expects fourth quarter revenues to be between approximately $2.2 billion and $2.35 billion, as compared to $2.7 billion reported in the prior quarter, or a sequential change in the range of about -12.8% to -18.4%.  more

Taiwanese OEMs Switching from Ericsson to Qualcomm for 3G Phones

Taiwan's handset manufacturers are increasingly switching from the Ericsson mobile phone platform to Qualcomm's own handset platform - report local industry sources. Sources told DigiTimes that because HTC has had good success with its Qualcomm-based 3G handsets, other major handset vendors such as Motorola, LG Electronics, Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Palm all intend to adopt the Qualcomm platform for their 3G products.  more

Shakeups Rock 1H08 Top 20 Semiconductor Supplier Ranking

IC InsightsÃ' recent research for its Strategic Reviews Online IC company database uncovered a big shakeup in the 1H08 top 20 semiconductor supplier ranking. There are eight U.S. companies in the top 20 (including three fabless semiconductor suppliers), six Japanese, three European, two South Korean, and one Taiwanese company (IC foundry supplier TSMC) in the ranking. As shown, it required at least $2.1 billion in 1H08 sales to make the top 20 ranking. Although the top four ranked companies remained the same, there were a number of "movers and shakers" up and down the remainder of the 1H08 ranking as compared to their full-year 2007 positions.  more

Private Equity Group Buys Sagem Mobile - Folds Assets into Purple Labs

Mobile phone software developer, Purple Labs is to acquire the mobile applications suite and software engineering team of Sagem Mobiles. The asset sale to Purple Labs is linked to an announcement by SAFRAN, a French technology group, that it is selling its Sagem Mobiles business unit to the private equity group, Sofinnova Partners - which is also an investor in Purple Labs.  more
