Brazil Leads Lat-Am in Deployments, Connections and Demand for WiMAX and 3G Services
Signals Telecom Consulting has issued a commentary which notes that as from 2010 Brazil will account for the greatest number of WiMAX accesses in the Latin America and the Caribbean region, a position that it will keep in the medium term. Signals expects that the setting of regulations for the use of the 2.5 GHz and 3.5 GHz bands, plus the tendering of new bands, will provide a strong impulse to this technology in Brazil. Signals foresees the entry into the market of large-scale operators such as Telefónica (via TVA), which will use WiMAX to expand its area of operation outside Sao Paulo, and SKY (DirecTV), among others, which will join the current efforts being made by Embratel and Neovia. Signals expects that operators will carry out their own development to be able to add their own last mile. more

Panama to study number portability in 2007
Panama's public services regulator ASEP will study next year the requirements needed by operators to implement number portability for local fixed and mobile services, daily La Prensa reported. more

Turkcell Passes Subscriber Landmark
Turkey's Turkcell says that it added 1.1 million net new subscribers during the third quarter of this year, bringing their total base of 30.8 million. Revenue increased to US$1,199.4 million in the third quarter of 2006 mainly due to the higher MoU and increasing subscriber base, despite the 4% currency depreciation against the dollar. more

Nokia and Aina Group Collaborate in Developing a New MVNO Concept
Nokia and Aina Group, a regional Finnish content and service provider, have announced a frame agreement to develop Aina Group's unique media-based mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) concept. In addition, Nokia will supply Aina with a circuit switched core network, including the Nokia Mobile Switching Center, Home Location Register, Intelligent Network, and Nokia Number Portability solutions. Nokia will also provide Nokia NetAct Traffica for real-time network monitoring, plus implementation, systems integration, start-up, care and training services. more

AT&T to re-enter the wireless market
The USA landline operator, AT&T says that it is re-entering the wireless market by signing a five year agreement with the CDMA operator, SprintPCS to roll out an MVNO. As the company is signing up with a CDMA operator, customers of the soon to be merged AT&T Wireless would need a new handset to use the AT&T "wireless" network. more
