Contract Awarded for Spanish Mobile Number Portability
The Spanish mobile operators are reported to have awarded a contract to local form, Indra to manage their mobile number portability platform from February 2010. The contract is worth €4.7 million over a three year period. more

Brazil Leads Lat-Am in Deployments, Connections and Demand for WiMAX and 3G Services
Signals Telecom Consulting has issued a commentary which notes that as from 2010 Brazil will account for the greatest number of WiMAX accesses in the Latin America and the Caribbean region, a position that it will keep in the medium term. Signals expects that the setting of regulations for the use of the 2.5 GHz and 3.5 GHz bands, plus the tendering of new bands, will provide a strong impulse to this technology in Brazil. Signals foresees the entry into the market of large-scale operators such as Telefónica (via TVA), which will use WiMAX to expand its area of operation outside Sao Paulo, and SKY (DirecTV), among others, which will join the current efforts being made by Embratel and Neovia. Signals expects that operators will carry out their own development to be able to add their own last mile. more

Econet Denies MTN Interest in Kenyan Network
Econet Wireless Kenya, which trades under the Yu brandname, has refuted local media reports that South Africa's MTN has offered US$450 for a stake in the company. The reports are "rumors," Chief Executive Officer Srinivasa Iyengar told reporters in Nairobi. The story emerged in Kenya's Standard newspaper. more

Just a few days after apparently announcing plans to hire 500 extra staff this year, Vodafone Turkey has announced 260 job cuts as part of a corporate restructuring. The job cuts came as part of "an organizational overhaul" and to increase efficiency, the company said in a statement. more

Econet Wireless Secures Kenyan Network Rollout Funding
New entrant into the Kenyan mobile market, Econet Wireless (trading as Yu) has secured the Sh 35 billion (US$450 million) loan necessary to fund its network rollout. Macedonia Offers Additional 3G Licenses

Mobile Termination Rates to Fall in Hungary
Hungary's telecoms regulator, the National Communications Authority (NHH) has announced plans which will require the three Hungarian mobile operators to reduce their termination charges in their networks. Termination charges should uniformly fall to HUF 11.86 in three steps by 1 December 2010. more
