Hutchison raises money for its 3G network - then goes on a spending spree

The UK 3G license holder, Hutchison3G has completed a US$5.1 billion financing package, raised from a combination of bank, vendor finance and shareholder sources for the build out of its UK 3G network. A vendor financial package from Nokia, NEC and Siemens contributed US$1.1 billion of the funds, and Hutchison3G's major shareholder, Hutchison Whampoa also contributed US$530 million. The funding should last until after the network's commercial launch in 2002. Following their involvement in financing Hutchison 3G, Nokia, NEC and Siemens have also been awarded infrastructure contracts for the UK network. The contract to supply the Core Network, including 3G packet core elements and 3G mobile switches has been awarded to Nokia. The Radio Access Network contract, including Base Station Controllers and Base Stations, has been awarded jointly to the NEC-Siemens co-operation and Nokia. The Radio Access Network contract is shared between Nokia and NEC on a geographical basis, with Nokia responsible for all sites south of the line from the River Severn to The Wash and NEC responsible for all sites to the north. Negotiations are currently taking place for NEC to also supply an element of Core Network to operate a development platform to facilitate end-to-end testing of their Radio Network. more
