According to The NPD Group, an aggressive "buy-one-get-one" promotion by Verizon Wireless helped RIM's BlackBerry Curve move past Apple's iPhone to become the best-selling consumer smartphone in the U.S. in the first quarter (Q1) of 2009. Despite Recession - US Smartphone Market Still Growing
According to The NPD Group, consumer sales of smartphones to U.S. consumers represented 23 percent of all handset sales in the fourth quarter (Q4) 2008 compared to just 12 percent in Q4 2007. Led by the release of Apple's iPhone 3G at $199, the average price for a smartphone fell 23 percent from $216 in Q4 2007 to $167 last year. more

Apple Leaps to Second Among Smartphone Sales in the USA
According to The NPD Group, consumer sales of smartphones to U.S. consumers reached 9 million units from January through July 2008 versus the same time period last year - a year-over-year increase of 84 percent. Even as overall handset sales and revenues declined in the U.S., smartphone revenue increased 71 percent -- reaching nearly $1.7 billion. more
