Sprint has announced commercial availability of the USA's first EV-DO Revision A-capable device - the Novatel Wireless S720 Sprint Mobile Broadband Card. This follows Sprint's recent announcement that it will begin upgrading the Sprint Power Vision Network to the faster EV-DO Revision A this year. Designed for operation with compatible laptops as well as the soon-to-be-available Linksys Wireless G-Router for Mobile Broadband, the Merlin S720 will allow customers to connect to the Sprint Power Vision Network and remotely access audio, video and data applications at DSL-like speeds. more

Novatel Wireless Completes 3.6Mbps Data Call on PC Card Modem
Novatel Wireless says that it has developed the Merlin U870, a HSDPA PC Card Modem, to support the global rollout of HSDPA networks. Novatel Wireless and Siemens have successfully completed their first 3.6Mbps (megabits per second) data call, a wireless link between a base station and a wireless modem. The test data call took place at Siemens' labs in Berlin, using the company's NodeB 880 base station and Novatel Wireless' Merlin U870. more

Siemens and Novatel Cooperate on 3.5G Kit
Siemens and Novatel Wireless have agreed to work together on producing end-to-end solutions for High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA), the next generation upgrade to the UMTS standard. Under the terms of the agreement, Siemens will offer its HSDPA infrastructure with Novatel Wireless as the preferred partner for the associated PC cards on a global basis.Also on the agenda are joint marketing activities and the joint development of new products for HSDPA end-to-end solutions."To ensure the economic success of HSDPA," comments Christoph Caselitz, President of Mobile Networks at Siemens Communications, "it is absolutely essential that the high speed devices are commercially available at the same time as the infrastructure is installed. Kyocera Wireless has said that its Kyocera Passport KPC650, a CDMA2000 1x EV-DO PC card, was the clear winner in a recent test of commercially available EV-DO cards by Quality Partners, an independent third-party testing lab. In a side-by-side test against commercially available EV-DO cards from Sierra Wireless (AirCard 580) and Novatel Wireless (V620), the Passport's throughput/speed was an average of 35 and 30 percent higher, respectively. more
