Cingular continues to improve its network
The USA's Cingular Wireless has said that it will invest more than US$500 million in improvements and upgrades to its wireless networks in the Southeast of the country, which includes North Carolina and South Carolina (as well as Georgia, Kentucky and Tennessee), in 2002. This initiative is part of the company's nationwide, US$5.8 billion capital expenditure for 2002. more

Cingular confirms move to GSM and EDGE
As reported here yesterday, Cingular Wireless has confirmed that it will be switching its network technology, providing initially a GPRS/GSM overlay on its existing TDMA and analogue network, then proceeding to EDGE. The company also confirmed that it will not need any additional radio spectrum to roll out the EDGE service, but did not rule out the need for extra spectrum in the future when demand rises, probably in about five years time. The company did not rule out a future migration to WCDMA, subject to the spectrum being made available in the future. more

AAA says cell phones not really responsible for car accidents
A report by the American Automobile Association has shown that car crashes in the USA are more likely to be caused by drivers changing a CD or eating than by their using a cell phone. The study was conducted for the AAA by the of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center, analyzed 5,000 accidents between 1995 and 1999 and said that just 1.5% of accidents were blamed on cell phone used. It was pointed out that drivers using their cell phone when an accident occurred were unlikely to admit that they had caused the accident." more

Lucent and U.S. Cellular have signed an agreement to supply digital wireless systems, engineering and installation services for the existing U.S. Cellular network in Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. The four-year contract is worth up to US$100 million. Under the agreement, Lucent has begun installing CDMA Mobile Switching Center, Series II Cell Sites and CDMA Double Density Growth Frames, all of which support the CDMA2000 3G standard. Lucent also will provide engineering and installation services through its Lucent Worldwide Services organization. Lucent has more than 40,000 CDMA base stations and 160 CDMA networks in commercial service around the world." more
