Teen Drivers Often Ignore Bans on Using Cellphones and Texting

Teenage drivers' cellphone use actually rose in North Carolina after the state enacted a cellphone ban for young drivers, a new study from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety finds. This is the case even though young drivers and their parents said they strongly support the restrictions. Parents and teens alike believe the ban on hand-held and hands-free phone use isn't being enforced. Researchers concluded that North Carolina's law isn't reducing teen drivers' cellphone use.  more

Alcatel-Lucent Considers Shutting Nth Carolina Factory in Cost Saving Measure

Alcatel-Lucent is reported to be preparing to close a factory which specializes in switching equipment based in Charlotte, North Carolina and switch production to one of two factories close to the Arizona-Mexico border. The local Charlotte Observer newspaper says that the move could cost nearly 225 jobs in the area.  more

Using Smartphones to Improve Student Maths Abilities

Qualcomm has given 100 smartphones to students in four high schools in three school districts across the state of North Carolina in an experiment to see if they can improve maths proficiency. The project will run through June 2008 and be followed up with an extensive research study examining the viability of utilizing Smartphones to increase student achievement in mathematics. Safeguards will be in place to assure that students are able to communicate only with authorized users and that they observe acceptable use policies for the Smartphones.  more
