First Active Handover Between LTE and CDMA Networks Demonstrated
LG and nortel have demonstrated the world's first 3GPP standards compliant active handover of a data transmission between a LTE network and a CDMA network. Inter-technology handover allowing mobile users the ability to move between LTE and CDMA networks without losing data connectivity means that operators can run these networks concurrently without impacting services. This will help to ensure that users have full network coverage while taking advantage of LTE speeds, wherever initially available. more

Despite the Naysayers WiMAX Subscriber Revenue Will Boom in 2009
Any reader who believed all the recent headlines would feel confident that the WiMAX market is being crushed by LTE. nortel has left the WiMAX market and Alcatel-Lucent has "backed off" from WiMAX; and these developments supposedly dealt a blow to Clearwire, which had so far chosen neither as an infrastructure vendor. But that's not quite the whole story. more

Nortel's bankruptcy filing enables radical change, and not just at Nortel
Opinion piece by Dana Cooperson and Matt Walker, analysts at Ovum
On 14 January 2009, nortel Networks moved beyond talk of divestiture and
speculation of bankruptcy, and filed for creditor protection in Canada and the
US, with nortel UK entering administration separately under a filing managed by
Ernst & Young. The company reached this point after multiple management
regimes failed in their attempts to remake the company after the bursting of the
telecoms bubble. nortel's move may result in a more balanced industry
structure for communications equipment.

Telecom Suppliers: The Pressure is on
A recent study by global management consultancy Arthur D. Little has found that traditional telecoms suppliers are facing an overall critical situation as the recession deepens in 2009. The increasing strength of the Asian market was identified as the primary threat that telecom suppliers face, due to its expanded reputation, innovation and consistent delivery of quality. For example, the Chinese telecoms provider Huawei has already achieved more than 10% of the global market share for investments of fixed and mobile network infrastructure, while the expansion rate for investments in fixed and mobile networks in industrialized countries is stagnating. more

T-Mobile Runs Live Tests of Mobile LTE Network in Germany
T-Mobile has successfully trialed a LTE based network in Germany in a live environment. In the trial, data was transmitted to and from a vehicle driving in Bonn between Deutsche Telekom's headquarters on the left side of the river Rhine and the T-Mobile headquarters on the riverÃ's right bank. On the four-kilometer test track data transmission went smoothly without interruptions and without loss of quality even across different cells - one of the most important prerequisites for qualification as a mobile communications network of the future. more
