Nortel to Seek Buyer for Stake in LG-Nortel Joint Venture

Nortel has confirmed that it has decided to seek a buyer for its majority stake (50% + 1 share) in LG-Nortel, the company's Korean joint venture with LG Electronics. Nortel, which is in bankruptcy protection said that LG-Nortel is a profitable, standalone business with a strong balance sheet, and has not filed for creditor protection.  more

Nortel Networks Reports $2.14 Billion Loss for Q4

Nortel Networks has reported a net loss of US$2.14 billion in the fourth quarter, compared with a net loss of $844 million a year earlier as the firm struggles to restructure itself in bankruptcy protection. The losses includes a reduction of the deferred tax asset of US$951 million, a write-down of $1.2 billion, special charges of US$97 million for restructurings and a loss of US$46 million due to currency fluctuations.  more

On 14 January 2009, Nortel Networks moved beyond talk of divestiture and speculation of bankruptcy, and filed for creditor protection in Canada and the US, with Nortel UK entering administration separately under a filing managed by Ernst & Young. The company reached this point after multiple management regimes failed in their attempts to remake the company after the bursting of the telecoms bubble. Nortel's move may result in a more balanced industry structure for communications equipment.  more

Canada's Nortel Networks has filed for bankruptcy protection - the first major telecoms firm to fall victim to the ongoing economic downturn. The company said that it expects that its normal day to day operations will continue during the financial restructuring of the business.  more

Nortel Cuts 3rd Quarter Outlook - To Sell Metro Ethernet Business

Canada's Nortel Networks has lowered its business outlook expectations and announced another round of cutbacks and asset sales. The company now expects 3rd quarter sales to be around US$2.3 billion, down on previous estimates of US$2.66 billion and compared to US$2.7 billion a year earlier. The firm lost US$113 million on sales of US$2.62 billion in the second quarter of this year.  more

Ericsson Supplying Vietnamese CDMA to GSM Migration Kit

Ericsson has signed its largest single contract in Vietnam, amounting to US$450 million, to develop and modernize Hanoi Telecom's nationwide mobile network. The partnership, a first in Vietnam, will also see Ericsson managing and operating the network under a full-scope managed services contract.  more
