Ericsson Outbids Nokia Siemens Networks for Nortel Assets
Ericsson has snatched a deal from under the noses of Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) after it won the bidding to buy Nortel Networks carrier assets. Last month, NSN agreed to buy parts of Nortel's Carrier Networks division relating to CDMA and LTE technology in North America for a payment of US$650 million. However the deal allowed counter bids, and Ericsson has offered US$1.13 billion, significantly outbidding NSN. more

On 14 January 2009, Nortel Networks moved beyond talk of divestiture and
speculation of bankruptcy, and filed for creditor protection in Canada and the
US, with Nortel UK entering administration separately under a filing managed by
Ernst & Young. The company reached this point after multiple management
regimes failed in their attempts to remake the company after the bursting of the
telecoms bubble. Nortel's move may result in a more balanced industry
structure for communications equipment.
