Mobile Handset Market Stays Afloat with 258 Million Shipped in 1Q-2009

Despite tough corporate and unemployment news making the headlines, the mobile handset-buying public did not head to the hills during the first quarter of 2009. Handset vendors had shipped 258 million handsets by the end of the quarter. Although that represents an 11% year-over-year decline, the result significantly exceeded the previous forecast of 253.5 million. "Green shoots are sprouting," is how ABI Research vice president Jake Saunders describes the latest figures.  more

Moody's changes outlook for Nokia' A1 rating to negative

Moody's has changed its outlook on nokia's ratings to negative, from stable - although it affirmed the A1 ratings for nokia's senior debt and the Prime-1 for short-term debt. The outlook change was triggered by nokia's results for the first quarter 2009, which confirmed a double-digit rate of decline for the mobile phone market in units and a one third year over year revenue reduction for nokia in this segment and it disclosed increasing earnings pressure in the nokia Siemens Networks business.  more

Nokia's CEO Outlines Vision for the Future

Today at its Annual General Meeting, nokia President and CEO, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo outlined the company's future strategy. "nokia is fundamentally changing its business model to transform both the company and the industry. While we continue to compete with the traditional mobile device manufacturers, we also are dealing with new competitors entering the market from the PC and Internet industries," he said.  more

Nokia Shows Off 3rd NFC Capable Mobile Phone

nokia has shown off its third fully integrated Near Field Communication (NFC) mobile phone, the nokia 6216 classic. The new arrival is nokia's first SIM-based NFC device which enables operators to build NFC services on to the SIM card. The nokia 6216 classic is expected to start shipping in the third quarter of 2009 in select markets with an estimated retail price of EUR 150 before taxes and subsidies.  more

Nokia Working on "Augmented Reality" for Mobile Phones

The University of Southern California (USC) and nokia's Research Center (NRC) in Hollywood have announced a research collaboration framework agreement that centers on advanced mobile user experiences. Nokia 1st-Quarter Profit Plunges by 90 Percent

nokia has posted an expected 27% drop in net sales for the first quarter to EUR 9.3 billion (US$12.2 billion) and a slightly worse than anticipated 90% drop in profits to EUR122 million (US$161 million).  more

Visa Makes NFC Mobile Point-of-Sale Payments Commercially Available

Credit card merchant, Visa has announced the launch of the world's first commercial Visa mobile payments service for point-of-sale transactions using Near Field Communications (NFC) technology. The service marks the first time consumers can purchase an NFC-enabled mobile device off the shelf and use that device to make Visa payWave-enabled transactions at the point-of-sale instead of using their payment card.  more
