Mobile Handset Market Stays Afloat with 258 Million Shipped in 1Q-2009

Despite tough corporate and unemployment news making the headlines, the mobile handset-buying public did not head to the hills during the first quarter of 2009. Handset vendors had shipped 258 million handsets by the end of the quarter. Although that represents an 11% year-over-year decline, the result significantly exceeded the previous forecast of 253.5 million. Moody's changes outlook for Nokia' A1 rating to negative

Moody's has changed its outlook on nokia's ratings to negative, from stable - although it affirmed the A1 ratings for nokia's senior debt and the Prime-1 for short-term debt. The outlook change was triggered by nokia's results for the first quarter 2009, which confirmed a double-digit rate of decline for the mobile phone market in units and a one third year over year revenue reduction for nokia in this segment and it disclosed increasing earnings pressure in the nokia Siemens Networks business. more

nokia has shown off its third fully integrated Near Field Communication (NFC) mobile phone, the nokia 6216 classic. The new arrival is nokia's first SIM-based NFC device which enables operators to build NFC services on to the SIM card.
