Worldwide Mobile Phone Shipments Down by 15.8% in First Quarter
The worldwide mobile phone market began 2009 with an expected sequential downturn, exacerbated by the challenges of the ongoing worldwide recession. According to IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped a total of 244.8 million units in the first quarter of 2009 (1Q09), approximately 15.8% lower than the 290.8 million units shipped during 1Q08. The first quarter of a new year is typically characterized by seasonally lower shipment volumes following a busy holiday quarter with channels clearing out excess inventory. But the 1Q09 decline was especially sharp due to weak end-user demand, currency volatility, and lack of credit for merchants as consumers and the supply chain adapt to the recession. more

Telefonica and Nokia partner to mobilize education in Latin America
Telefonica and nokia have signed an agreement to bring educational content to remote schools in Latin America through the use of mobile technology. The agreement will expand the current scope of Telefonica Foundation's "Proniño" and "Educared" social programs - two private initiatives focused on using information and communications technologies in the improvement of the quality of education in the region. more

Europe to Boost Rural Broadband Internet Access
The European Commission says that it is earmarking €1 billion (US$1.3 billion) to achieve 100 % high-speed internet coverage for all European citizens by 2010 as part of the European Economic Recovery Plan. On average, 93 % of Europeans can enjoy a high speed online connection but in some countries broadband covers less than half of the rural population. more

Huawei Finally Wins Costa Rican 3G Contract
Huawei has won a US$235 million contract to build a 3G network in Costa Rica, according to local media. Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE) deputy manager Claudio Bermudez said the 3G network should be operational throughout the Central American nation by the end of 2009. more
