Nokia's UK Boss Moves to TV Set-Top Box Manufacturer
nokia's Managing Director for the UK and Ireland markets, Dr Mark Loughran is to leave the company and will be joining the UK based digital set-top box vendor, Pace. Mark will join Pace's Executive Leadership Team, reporting to CEO Neil Gaydon, at the start of next month to spearhead the development of Pace's international IP, gateway and Networks businesses as part of the Group's strategy to enable converged digital services for operators. more

Nokia and ST-Ericsson Partnering in TD-SCDMA

Worldwide Mobile Phone Shipments Down by 15.8% in First Quarter
The worldwide mobile phone market began 2009 with an expected sequential downturn, exacerbated by the challenges of the ongoing worldwide recession. According to IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped a total of 244.8 million units in the first quarter of 2009 (1Q09), approximately 15.8% lower than the 290.8 million units shipped during 1Q08. The first quarter of a new year is typically characterized by seasonally lower shipment volumes following a busy holiday quarter with channels clearing out excess inventory. But the 1Q09 decline was especially sharp due to weak end-user demand, currency volatility, and lack of credit for merchants as consumers and the supply chain adapt to the recession. more

Shipments of Wi-Fi-enabled cellular handsets will double in volume by the end of 2010, compared to January 2008, and that growth curve is expected to continue through 2013. This data, contained in a new ABI Research study, shows how driven by increasing consumer awareness and demand, new operator business models, and increased value for handset manufacturers, Wi-Fi technology will continue to penetrate deeper into mobile handsets over the next five years. more

Nokia Q4 Profit Slumps 69% - Warns of Difficult 2009
nokia has reported that its fourth-quarter sales dropped by 19% to €12.7 billion (US$16.4 billion) and profits slumped by a huge 69% to €576 million (US$744 million), compared to a profit of €1.84 billion (US$2.4 billion) a year ago. Analysts polled by Bloomberg News had estimated profit of €975 million on sales of €13.1 billion. more

A recent study by global management consultancy Arthur D. Little has found that traditional telecoms suppliers are facing an overall critical situation as the recession deepens in 2009. The increasing strength of the Asian market was identified as the primary threat that telecom suppliers face, due to its expanded reputation, innovation and consistent delivery of quality. For example, the Chinese telecoms provider Huawei has already achieved more than 10% of the global market share for investments of fixed and mobile network infrastructure, while the expansion rate for investments in fixed and mobile networks in industrialized countries is stagnating. more
