Standards Based Solution for Voice and SMS Services Over LTE Announced

­A gang of telecoms companies have jointly defined the preferred way to ensure the smooth introduction and delivery of voice and SMS services on Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks worldwide. Orange UK Signs Reseller Deal with Brightpoint

Orange UK has entered into an agreement with Brightpoint, a distributor of wireless devices and customised logistic services. This collaboration in the UK is a direct distribution agreement that will see Brightpoint's IT and PBX resellers target business customers with a range of solutions including Orange connectivity, Orange devices and SIM only deals. This agreement will allow Orange to leverage Brightpoint's device agreements with nokia and RIM as well as its exclusive agreement with HTC in the UK.  more

FMC and femtocell equipment markets poised to take off in face of downturn

Market research firm Infonetics Research has released a report on FMC and Femtocell Equipment, which forecasts that combined, sales of FMC network element equipment and femtocell equipment are expected to grow at a healthy rate through the economic downturn and really take off in 2011, reaching nearly $8 billion worldwide by 2013.  more

Nokia Siemens Wins Spanish Network Management Contract

In addition to the separately announced deal in the UK, nokia Siemens Networks has also picked up a services contract to manage Orange's fixed and mobile multivendor networks in Spain, including the ADSL broadband internet service provider.  more

Orange and Vodafone Outsource their UK Network Management

Two of the UK's mobile networks have separately - but on the same day - announced network maintenance outsourcing deals. Orange UK has given a 5-year contract to nokia Siemens Networks, while Vodafone UK granted a 7-year contract to Ericsson.  more

Smart Phones Ring in Healthy Growth in 2009 Despite Mobile Meltdown

Although the outlook for the overall mobile handset market continues to dim, smart phones remain a bright spot with global unit growth as high as 11.1 percent in 2009, iSuppli is predicting. iSuppli's optimistic forecast for global smart phone unit shipments calls for 192.3 million units in 2009, up 11.1 percent from 173.6 million in 2008. A more pessimistic outlook calls for growth of only 6 percent this year, reaching 183.9 million units.  more

Managed Services for Network Equipment OEMs to Reach $6.4 Billion in 2009

Managed services for mobile networks returned about $19 billion revenue in 2008, ($5.8 billion for network services and $13.4 billion for IT-related services.) Europe led managed services adoption: Tier One operators there face stiff competition, so they have turned to managed services to improve their margins. According to a new study from ABI Research, that $19 billion figure represents only a small part of the potential addressable market.  more

Industry to Settle on a Generic Phone Charger for All Mobile Phones

The GSMA and 17 mobile operators and manufacturers have announced that they are committed to implementing a cross-industry standard for a universal charger for new mobile phones. The aim of the initiative, led by the GSMA, is to ensure that the mobile industry adopts a common format for mobile phone charger connections and energy-efficient chargers resulting in an estimated 50 per cent reduction in standby energy consumption and the potential elimination of up to 51,000 tonnes of duplicate chargers.  more

Rich Communication Suite Initiative Gains Momentum

The GSMA has reported significant progress in the Rich Communication Suite (RCS) Initiative, a service providing enriched communication capabilities such as in-call multimedia sharing, conversational messaging and presence-enhanced contact management, all accessible through a user's mobile phone contact list. The initiative has generated considerable momentum across a number of fronts since the GSMA brought RCS into its work programme in September 2008, including the delivery of the RCS Release 1 specification, the addition of new programme participants and the successful completion of interoperability tests.  more
