Just One-Third of Smartphone Owners Consider Nokia for an Upgrade

Only a third of existing smartphone owners would consider a nokia product when they next change their handset, reports a YouGov survey. This is down on 46% who would have considered nokia as an upgrade option last December. On top of that, only ten percent of smartphone owners expect to purchase a nokia, a drop of nine percent over the last six months.  more

Navigation and mapping provider, NAVTEQ has released results of its first location targeted campaign in Europe by a global brand advertiser, McDonald's. The campaign, powered by NAVTEQ LocationPoint Advertising, enabled McDonald's to deliver location-relevant mobile ads to users of nokia Ovi Maps when they were within a certain distance of McDonald's 82 restaurants in Finland.  more

Etisalat Signs Up to Nokia's Ovi Platform

The UAE based operator, Etisalat has inked a deal to offer access to nokia's mobile internet portal, Ovi to its customers. In the first phase of the collaboration, Etisalat's UAE mobile customers will be able to access Ovi Maps and N-Gage Games on their nokia devices.  more

Thai Operator to Push Ahead with 3G Network Rollout

Thailand's state owned operator, TOT has told the Reuters news agency that it will proceed with plans to deploy a 3G network, with a commercial launch due by the end of the year. The government has previously hinted that it will sell 3G auctions in the first half of this year.  more

Nokia in Talks with Facebook Over Handset Integration

Internet social networking website, Facebook is reported to be in talks with a number of mobile phone manufacturers to more tightly embed access to its services within the phone menus. The Wall Street Journal also noted that Facebook is in close talks at the moment with nokia on this topic.  more

Mobile Phone Market Poised for Slowdown in 2009

The impact of the global economic crisis will spread to the mobile phone market resulting in a downturn in shipments in 2009. According to IDC, total mobile phone volumes will be 2.2% lower in 2009 than 2008 levels, the first downturn in annual shipment volumes since 2001 when shipments declined 2.3%. Over the past several years, the mobile phone market has enjoyed double-digit annual growth due to an increased emphasis on emerging markets. However, emerging market growth has been steadily slowing as these markets mature. IDC now expects worldwide growth to be just 7.3% in 2008 before slipping into negative growth in 2009.  more

GPS Smartphones Generating Renewed Momentum for the LBS Infrastructure Industry
