Smartphone Shipments in Malaysia Expected to Fall in 2009
Results from IDC's Asia/Pacific Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, 4Q 2008, shows that sales of converged mobile devices (smartphones) in Malaysia dropped by 3% sequentially in the fourth quarter of 2008 (4Q08), but shipments for the full 2008 grew slightly to reach 1.2 million units. The market stayed afloat with strong consumer demand for data-centric converged mobile devices, which continued to beat market expectations by growing 80% year-on-year, while voice-centric converged mobile devices declined by 9%. more

Nokia Sets Up $10 Million Fund Mobile Flash Developers
nokia and Adobe have announced a US$10 million fund to develop Flash based applications for mobile phones. It's worth remembering that the Apple iPhone currently does not support the Flash format - so the move may be seen as a way of promoting nokia's support for the format. The new fund is a result of the Open Screen Project, an industry-wide initiative of more than 20 industry leaders set to enable a consistent experience for web browsing and standalone applications. Additional Open Screen Project partners are expected to join the fund in the future. more

Worldwide Mobile Phone Market Declined by 12.6% in Fourth Quarter
The worldwide mobile phone market experienced an unusual downturn in the normally robust fourth quarter of 2008 (4Q08). According to IDC's Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped a total of 289.0 million units, 12.6% lower than the 330.8 million units shipped during 4Q07. For the full year 2008, vendors shipped a total of 1.18 billion units worldwide, 3.5% greater than the 1.14 billion units shipped during 2007. more

GPS-Enabled Handsets Expected to Bypass the Economic Downturn
Shipments of GPS-enabled mobile phones will hit a speed-bump in 2009, but will still manage to post year-to-year unit growth through the current economic downturn, according to a new market study by ABI Research. While global handset shipments are expected to drop by 4-5% in 2009, GPS-enabled phones will climb to 240 million units, an increase of 6.4% over 2008. more
