Telefonica Announces Wide-Spread Trials of LTE Networks
Telefonica says that it has reached an agreement with six LTE technology providers to launch LTE test projects in six different countries. The suppliers Telefonica has chosen so far: Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, Huawei, NEC, Nokia Siemens Networks and ZTE, will start rolling out the equipment necessary for testing the technology during the coming months. more

Nokia Siemens Networks says that it recently made the world's first LTE call using commercial base station and fully standard compliant software. The Nokia Siemens Networks' call was made via base stations with fully complaint software to the 3GPP Rel.8 (March 2009 baseline) LTE standard, bringing LTE trials closer to the behavior of future commercial deployments. more

Wireless operators will spend about $3.3 billion building LTE base stations in 2011, according to the most recent study of LTE from ABI Research.
