Bango - the mobile payments and analytics specialist - reports a 600% growth in traffic to mobile websites. The company analyzed traffic to a range of mobile sites over the last 12 months. Data was gathered by sampling across 50 million phone users worldwide who have accessed third party mobile sites through its platform.  more

Intel and Nokia merge software platforms for future computing devices

Nokia and Intel have announced that they are to merge their respective mobile-Linux platforms, Maemo and Moblin to create a single open software platform called MeeGo. The announcement builds on the companies' collaboration announced last June.  more

Majority of smartphones now have touch screens

For the first time ever, smart phones with touch screens accounted for more than half of all smart phone shipments globally in Q4 2009, taking 55% of the market, according to the latest Canalys estimates. Touch-screen smart phone shipments were up 138% year on year in Q4, reaching almost 30 million units, in a quarter where overall smart phone market growth stood at 41%. Canalys puts total touch-screen smart phone shipments for the year at over 75 million, more than double the 2008 figure. Total smartphone shipments in 2009 hit a new peak of 166 million units.  more

Mobile Phone Shipments Rebound To Double-Digit Growth in Q4

The worldwide mobile phone market grew 11.3% in the fourth quarter of 2009, ending five consecutive quarters of retrenchment. According to IDC's Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped 325.3 million units in 4Q09 compared to 292.4 million units in the fourth quarter of 2008. Vendors shipped a total of 1.13 billion units on a cumulative worldwide basis in 2009, down 5.2% from the 1.19 billion units shipped in 2008.  more

Kodak Sues Apple and RIM Over Imaging Patents

Eastman Kodak has filed lawsuits against Apple and Research In Motion alleging the infringement of Kodak digital imaging technology. ­The Kodak complaint, filed with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC), specifically claims that Apple's iPhones and RIM's camera-enabled BlackBerry devices infringe a Kodak patent that covers technology related to a method for previewing images.  more

LTE to Drive IMS Market to More than Double Current Size

Revenue from mobile IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) sales is expected to increase more than 100% over the next five years, according to ABI Research. Approximately $8.4 billion was spent on IMS during 2009. According to principal analyst Aditya Kaul, that figure will rise to $17.3 billion in 2014.  more

Taiwanese Feature Phone Industry Faces More Challenges Ahead

Taiwan's feature phone manufacturers have faced the end-of-life of some products manufactured for major customers Motorola, Sony Ericsson, and nokia, while there were merely a couple of new models which began shipments in the 3rd-quarter of 2009. As a result, Taiwanese feature phone industry shipment volume saw substantial declines in the third quarter, dropping 21.8% sequentially and 55.9% year-on-year.  more
