Nigeria's National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers (NATCOMS) called for a boycott of GSM phone usage last Friday in the country. The one day boycott was set up to try and persuade the network operators to lower their costs and improve coverage. The boycott was supported by the National Association of GSM Subscribers of Nigeria and the Consumers Rights Project. more

More confusion in Nigerian analogue license row
The Nigerian Communications Commission has confirmed that it renewed the ETACS license held by Mobile Telecommunication Services (MTS) but has now added that MTS cannot offer services until its spectrum is allocated by the Ministry of Communications. The NCC said that MTS's license was renewed after no objections were made, but the spectrum that MTS had been using in 1995 was no longer available as they had been reclaimed by the government in October 2000. MTS has paid just US$1 million for its license renewal, but is expected to have to pay a further fee to be allocated actual radio spectrum. The license that MTS has been granted is for 10 years, and does not permit any future migration to a digital standard." more
