Nigerian Operator Starts Compensation Payments
Nigerian operator, Celtel has started a phased process of offering compensation to its subscribers following a ruling from the telecoms regulator, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). The operator was ordered to offer free airtime worth N175 (US$1.50) to each subscriber due to problems with network reliability. For comparison, according to The Mobile World, the monthly ARPU is US$10 - so the compensation equates to some 15% of the average monthly spend. more

Nigerian Operator Subscriber Base Slumps Following Recount
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) recently began releasing information on the number of active subscribers in Nigeria, and as a result we have adjusted the figures in The Mobile World Database to give a more accurate depiction of the market. This was a crucial revision, not least because the NCC reported a rapid rise in the inactivity level in the final quarter of the year: from 15.9% at the end of Q3, it reached 26.9% at year-end. more
