Just Under 3 Billion SIM Cards Shipped in 2008
SIMalliance, the global association of SIM card manufacturers has reported that global SIM card shipments exceeded 2.9 billion units during 2008, with strong demand from the emerging markets of India, China, Asia Pacific and Latin America contributing to a 29 per cent increase on shipments over the previous year. more

Toshiba Moves into NFC Capable SIM Market
Toshiba has announced the development of a SIM card for use within mobile phones supporting nfc (Near Field Communication) services - which it expects to start sampling from Q3 this year. Toshiba's newly developed USIM card meets the latest specifications of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute-Smart Card Platform (ETSI SCP) and the GSM Association (GSMA). It is also compatible with the GSMA's Pay-Buy-Mobile programme, and offers full support for mobile contactless services, and meets all the security levels required for international payment applications. more

Gemalto Embeds Near Field Capability into SIM Card
Smart card provider, Gemalto has announced the successful integration of Japan Credit Bureau's (JCB) contactless payment solution, J/Speedy onto its Near Field Communications (nfc) SIM card. In this way, Gemalto has provided both nfc-embedded mobile and SIM-based nfc options supporting two of the industry's most popular contactless standards. Also integrated is a smart card web server solution that displays J/Speedy menus through the handset as web pages. more

Elisa says that it is the first operator in the Nordic and Baltic countries to test Near Field Communication technology (nfc technology) where a SIM card is used as a security platform. SIM card, provided by digital security leader Gemalto, enables safe transactions and payments, and makes it possible to transfer services from one telephone to another. Joint Venture for Smart Cards in Mobile Phones
NXP Semiconductors, formerly Philips Semiconductors, and Sony have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to establish by mid-year 2007 a joint venture (JV) that will drive global adoption of contactless smart card applications in mobile phones. The anticipated JV will plan, develop, produce and market a secure chip that will include both MIFARE and FeliCa operating systems and applications, as well as other contactless card operating systems and applications. more
