Nokia Shows Off 3rd NFC Capable Mobile Phone

Nokia has shown off its third fully integrated Near Field Communication (nfc) mobile phone, the Nokia 6216 classic. The new arrival is Nokia's first SIM-based nfc device which enables operators to build nfc services on to the SIM card. The Nokia 6216 classic is expected to start shipping in the third quarter of 2009 in select markets with an estimated retail price of EUR 150 before taxes and subsidies.  more

Just Under 3 Billion SIM Cards Shipped in 2008

SIMalliance, the global association of SIM card manufacturers has reported that global SIM card shipments exceeded 2.9 billion units during 2008, with strong demand from the emerging markets of India, China, Asia Pacific and Latin America contributing to a 29 per cent increase on shipments over the previous year.  more

Thai Bank Trials Mobile Payments with NFC-Enabled Mobile Phones

Finland based nfc vendor, Venyon and Kasikornbank, a bank in Thailand are cooperating to evaluate contactless mobile payments in Thailand for a potential service launch in future. As a first step, Kasikornbank recently announced its first Near Field Communication (nfc) mobile payment trial in Bangkok, Thailand.  more

Toshiba Moves into NFC Capable SIM Market

Toshiba has announced the development of a SIM card for use within mobile phones supporting nfc (Near Field Communication) services - which it expects to start sampling from Q3 this year. Toshiba's newly developed USIM card meets the latest specifications of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute-Smart Card Platform (ETSI SCP) and the GSM Association (GSMA). It is also compatible with the GSMA's Pay-Buy-Mobile programme, and offers full support for mobile contactless services, and meets all the security levels required for international payment applications.  more

First SIMpass-enabled mobile phone launched in China

China Unicom has launched a mobile phone based payment service in the city of Chongqing which enables users to use their phone to pay for transport tickets and at various retailer for normal purchases. The 'Cqpass' is a multi-system mobile payment service first to use the SIMpass enabled custom-made mobile phone that was unveiled in Chongqing last month.  more

Austria Tests New NFC Based Mobile Ticketing Service

Mobilkom austria says that it has developed an nfc service in cooperation with the Austrian railway operator, ÖBB for mobile ticketing in pre-selling conditions. The new chip-based nfc application is based on the interoperable international standard VDV-KA (Association of German Transport Undertakings - Core Application) and has been integrated into the mobilkom austria mobile ticketing platform.  more

NFC Implementation in Handsets on the Right Track with SWP but Delays Still Expected

The chicken and egg scenario that has bogged down the embryonic nfc market has taken steps forward in recent weeks. The mobile operatorsÃ' preference for the Single Wire Protocol (SWP) form for nfc implementation received official endorsement from the GSM Association last month. This followed the final ratification of the standard and a signing of a memorandum of understanding with EMVCo. in September. Now some industry insiders are expecting large volume shipments of nfc handsets in the second half of 2009.  more

Sagem Orga Develops NFC Enabled SIM Card for Orange

Smart card vendor, Sagem Orga has announced the availability of an nfc Single Wire Protocol enabled SIM card, developed in co-operation with Orange. The firm said that the SIM card has been customized for Orange specific needs.  more

GSM Trade Body Wants All New Phones to Have NFC by Mid-2009

The GSMA, the global trade group for the mobile industry, has called for full nfc functionality -- including the standardised 'Single Wire Protocol' interface -- to be built into all new mobile phones from mid-2009.  more

German Railway Testing NFC Enabled Mobile Tickets

An expanded trial of mobile ticketing - this time using nfc enabled mobile phones - has been announced by a railway operator in the German federal state of Hesse. The trial is being organised by the public transport authority of the Frankfurt Rhein-Main region (RMV), T-Systems, Nokia and Venyon.  more
